CoLAB BIOREF is building the vision to be one of the driving forces to change the paradigm of economic development through a national strategy for biomass as a renewable resource. CoLAB BIOREF contributes for boosting the public and private investment on the following value chains: renewable gases (e.g., biomethane), advanced biofuels (e.g., biojetfuels), and bio-based products (bioplastics, bioactive cpds) thus contributing for the decarbonisation of several economic sectors.

Projects carried out with direct financing from the companies involved
Projects carried out with co-financing from National or European funding programmes
Move2LowC project will allow the development of different technologies up to TRL 6, whilst establishing an exploitation plan to support the investment in biofuel production on a commercial scale. This project will mobilize Universities, R&D Institutes, SMEs and Large Companies to cooperate in order to increase the use of marine biomass (microalgae), residual forest biomass and industrial effluents for the production of biofuels, within the circular economy concept.
With this project, CoLAB BIOREF will apply its know-how, as technologies are developed for the production and refining of biofuels to be used, replicated and marketed by the Large Companies of the Competitiveness Cluster, fulfilling the Program's objective of contributing to the creation of collective dynamization strategies and the qualification of business R&D.
The HyFuelUp consortium - "Hybrid biomethane production from integrated biomass conversion" aims to develop a technology for producing renewable natural gas from waste, including forestry, combining market knowledge with academic and industrial excellence. This project will develop an advanced technology for gasification of biomass waste and subsequent methanation of the resulting gases, in a hybrid process with the addition of green hydrogen. The biomethane produced will then be liquefied and used in the decarbonization of the transport sector, particularly in long-distance road haulage and maritime transport, thus leading to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
(1) Demonstration of an innovative process for the efficient and cost-effective production of biomethane in relevant environment (TRL 6-7) by combining thermochemical and renewable hydrogen technologies. (2) Demonstration of the full value chain, including distribution of biomethane in liquefied form, in order to contribute to an increased use of biomethane in transport and energy systems.
H2DRIVEN is a proposal for the implementation and valorization of a new value chain in the area of green e-fuels in Portugal, with the capacity for design, development and production of green H2, biogenic CO2 and e-methanol, assuming itself as an aggregating platform and inducer of new competencies in different disciplinary areas and in disruptive technologies.
Based on the realization of R&D and innovation activities and the diversification of the specialization profile of the national production system, H2DRIVEN will contribute to 1) increase the competitiveness of the national economy and, at the same time, increase the country's resilience; 2) reduce the dependence on external markets, increasing exports and contributing to the technological sovereignty of the EU; 3) increase investment in R&D and create new technical and scientific knowledge; (4) develop 2 new PPS of high technological intensity, and 5) reduce, until 2027, a total of 105 kton/CO2 (year) of emissions.
The Moving2Neutrality Agenda responds to the challenge of energy transition in transport by producing sustainable fuels towards carbon neutrality.
This project foresees an investment of € 578 million, savings of 952 thousand tons of GHG and the creation of 502 to 600 jobs (direct and indirect), divided into 4 PPSs: 1) Production of green H2 on an industrial scale; 2) Production of green fuels for transport; 3) Distribution of green H2 for the road sector; 4) Support for Consortium Management.
In an integrated manner, 13 R&D&I projects will be developed, promoting the creation of knowledge clusters in low carbon technologies.
Demonstrate an innovative pyrolysis concept for the efficient and cost-effective production of biochar and wood vinegar at TRL 7 through thermochemical technologies combined with solar energy. Demonstrate a complete value chain for biochar and wood vinegar, in order to accelerate the acceptance of these products in the markets as ecosystem services.
